Stacks are a visual means to group similar images together to simplify the display and workflow when dealing with large groups of images. Stacks are either displayed Open - with all images in the Stack visible - or Closed - with only the top or first image in the Stack exposed. Stacks are groupings of Versions, and each stack is contained in one Catalog Folder.
Using Stacks In File System mode or in Catalog Folders imported By Referenced Locations, stacks are only used to group multiple versions from one Master File. In Catalogs imported by Refer to Original Files, stacks can serve many purposes, and you can use them for a variety of organizational tasks. You might use Stacks to group shots from a burst of images or made from exposure bracketing, selecting the best shot from the group as the Top image. Or you might Stack a set of images that you will use to build a multi-image panorama or that you will otherwise combine into a single image in another application. Or, you can use Stacks simply to group similar images together to simplify browsing through your images. When you create a new Version from an existing Version, they will be put into a Stack. You can remove these from the Stack if so desired. To create a Stack from Versions:

A new Stack will be created with the entire contents of the selected Stacks. When sorting the Thumbnails visible in the Thumbnail Panel, Versions within Stacks will not be Sorted. This is to maintain the manual sort order you can specify in a Stack, ensuring that the Top Version remains on Top. The entire Stack will appear in a sorted Thumbnail Panel in the location specified by the Top image. You can change the sorting within a Stack by drag-and-dropping the Versions, or from the Context Menu. Editing Images in a Closed Stack When editing the Top image in a closed Stack, only that one Version will be modified by any image adjustments you make. Likewise, any metadata or Ratings applied to a closed Stack will get applied to the Top Version in the Stack. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
